Statement

In Barry Maxwell’s abstract paintings, he plays with contrasting painterly approaches; opening a dialogue between the rigidity of constructivist compositions and the randomness of time-worn graffiti. Forms build through a process of acrylic washes and layers of paint and glazes; often solidifying boundaries with masking tape. This process exposes moments when the paint medium and materials shift, giving the works a visible history and an improvisational rhythm.

Recent works have adopted a formal sensibility, focusing on classicist elements of the grid – and concurrently dismissing them. The tension created is an accumulation of moves repeated and interrupted, then continued. Influences include science-fiction, geologic formations, and the time-lapse urban landscape. Maxwell’s approach is also informed by the natural processes and elements he finds as an avid surfer and hiker in Washington State.
